Das flores d'ahna um ramalhete agreste
E são versos a flora perfumada,
Que de meu seio a solidão reveste.


E vós que amais a parasita ardente,
Que abre como um suspiro em pleno maio,
E o aroma que anima o cálix rubro
â€" Talvez de uma alma perfumoso ensaio,


E esse vago tremer de ní­veas pétalas,
Que faz das flores meias borboletas,
O escarlate das malvas presumidas,
A modéstia infantil das violetas,


E essa linguagem transparente e meiga
Que a natureza fala nas campinas
Pelas vozes das brisas suspirosas,
Pela boca rosada das boninas ...


Hoje, na vossa festa, em vosso dia,
Em meio aos vossas í­ntimos amores...
Juntai aos ramalhetes estes versas,
Pois versas de afeição... também são flores!

Antonio de Castro Alves

Antônio Frederico de Castro Alves was a Brazilian poet and playwright, famous for his abolitionist and republican poems. One of the most famous poets of the "Condorism", he won the epithet of "O Poeta dos Escravos" ("Slaves' Poet"). He is the patron of the 7th chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Alves was born in the town of Curralinho (rechristened "Castro Alves" in his honor in 1900), in the Brazilian State of Bahia, to Antônio José Alves, a medician, and Clélia Brasília da Silva Castro, one of the daughters of José Antônio da Silva Castro (a.k.a.
