Nu Natten længes og Dagen er kort,
Og Somren er dragen til Syden bort.

Og Droslen og Stæren fløi over Sø,
Hvis ei de var flygtet, da maatte de døe.

Nu gjalder det høit i Vindens Horn,
Mens Sneen glimter bag Busk og Torn.

Der kommer en Slæde, den glider forbi,
Mens Ulvene tude paa vilden Sti.

I Slæden sidder en fangen Mand
Han ligner et Gjenfærd paa Gravens Rand.

Han ligner et Gjenfærd, han ligner en Død,
Christ give, han hviled i Jordens Skjød.

Men Vinden leger med Sneens Flokker,
Med Hestens Manke, med Fangens Lokker.

Og Slæden glider saa let forbi
Foruden Bjælder paa vilden Sti.

Den glider mod Øst paa sorte Gænger,
En liden Sky under Maanen hænger,

Paa sorte Gænge i hviden Snee,
Den næste Dag var ei Spor at see.

Og Granen sukked og spurgte Maanen,
Hvorhen han kjørte, men Maanen taug.

Johannes Carsten Hauch (May 12, 1790 - March 4, 1872), Danish poet, was born of Danish parents residing at Frederikshald in Norway. In 1802 he lost his mother, and in 1803 returned with his father to Denmark. In 1807 he fought as a volunteer against the English invasion. He entered the university of Copenhagen in 1808, and in 1821 took his doctors degree. He became the friend and associate of Steffens and Oehlenschläger, warmly adopting the romantic views about poetry and philosophy.
